Juko Bokken  (Cardio/Sword work)

Tuesday  6pm - 7pm

Thursday  7:15 - 8:15pm

Friday  6pm - 7pm

Juko Bokken: A Workout to a Different Beat (for Physical & Mental Improvement/Cardio Workout)
Tired of the same old workout routines? Then grab a bokken (wooden Japanese sword) and strike, slice and thrust your way into great shape!  In Juko Bokken, Black Belt instructor James Barker transforms ancient Japanese sword fighting techniques into an intense fitness program that is fun, exciting and completely different from any other workout you have done.

Specially designed to work the whole person, this program teaches precise striking movements that shape your upper and lower body while building strength and mental focus. Since properly wielding the bokken requires the whole body to move it, your legs are constantly lunging and squatting while your chest, shoulders, arms and back to control the sword’s weight.

Juko Bokken is also a fantastic cardiovascular workout that can burn up to 500 calories a class! Participants blend together various movements into different, movie-like, choreographed fighting combinations performed at high speed. All moves are performed with control and balance in true martial arts style that lend a meditative aspect which helps to calm the mind and spirit while building the body.

Sign up for just one class a week or all three!

Please contact the instructor, Jim Barker, directly to sign up for these classes.

 Yoga  (Hatha)

Tuesdays, 7:30pm - 8:30pm

  Start March 4th    8 weeks -  $80
Call to get on the waiting list!

Kripalu Yoga, known as the "yoga of consciousness", values both ancient yogic traditions and the inner wisdom of each practitioner's body/mind. Physical postures, breathing techniques, deep relaxation and meditation are used to cultivate many of the benefits of yoga, including strength, flexibility, calmness, and overall well-being.

Kripalu means "compassion". In keeping with it's name, approaches the practice of yoga with the intentions of awareness, self-acceptance and authenticity. In this context, yoga is seen as a journey rather than a destination. This approach to yoga is less about achieving a certain form or reaching a particular goal, than it is about being fully present for the feelings and experiences of one's own yoga practice as it unfolds moment to moment.

I believe that a peaceful way of being starts on the mat & is carried into the world by each person whom we touch.

Students should bring their own mat and any props needed (blocks, yoga straps/tie, blanket, eye pillow). Dress in layers to ensure comfort throughout the class. It is recommended to abstain from heavy meals prior to class.

Please call to see if there is space available.

Class size will be limited to 10.   Instructor:  Jenna Bashore

Jenna is trained in Kripalu Yoga and can offer a gentle, dynamic or mixed level class.  Jenna has an MS in Exercise Science (research interest was in stress management) and is also certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health/Fitness Instructor.

 Beginner T'ai Chi

Saturday  1pm - 2pm  Start 3/8/08

Tai Chi/Qi Gong (for Mental Growth/Physical Improvement)
Tai Chi improves overall fitness, balance, coordination and agility. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rates, promote relaxation, and release stress and tension.

Our Tai Chi sessions are usually a group class that last about 1 hour. Students will either participate in Bejing 24 or Modified Short Form Style.

Each session begins with a gentle warm-up exercise. Then Black Belt instructor James Barker will guide the class through a series of forms, each made up of a succession of movements. This makes it perfect for anyone to join the class at any time. Your instructor encourages the class to perform all the movements in a slow, relaxed manner and to focus on deep breathing. At the end of every class, there is time for cool-down, relaxation and meditation.

If there is enough interest, we will add another class during the day.  Let us know what day/time would work best for you!

Class size will be limited.

It is a meditation in motion. The pace in moderate: not too slow, not too vigorous.  Students are always encouraged to move at their own pace and do only poses that feel appropriate for them.  Intermediate yoga poses will be presented, with variations for all abilities.  All classes end with a few minutes of quiet relaxation.

Walking Club

Intermediate level:  We meet Monday & Wednesday mornings at 7:45am sharp at the Harwinton office and leave for a brisk-paced 5 mile loop.  No baby carriages allowed because we go off road for a short while.  Dogs welcome!  If we plan to take another route, we will post the change of meeting place here well in advance.  We sometimes do the 3+ mile walk thru Sessions Woods or the Farmington River Walk.  Please call to let us know you plan to come.

Beginner level:    We will meet on Smith Lane in Burlington on Friday mornings at 8am.  We will walk through the three dead end streets and back.  You can stop at any time.  The pace will be slow on the first lap and increase to moderate on the second and third lap.  Park on the street where Smith lane meets the first side street.  If you arrive late, just drive down the road until you see us.  This is a dead end road with very little traffic.  Baby carriages welcome.  Call to let us know if you are interested.   We only do this walk if we have beginners - call now.  We plan to walk on Friday 4/11.  If it is a steady rain, we'll do a cardio video at the office instead.  485-0405

No charge - make a plan to get the weight off!

We will walk in rain, sleet, wind and light snow - dress accordingly (if the plows are out it is too dangerous to go).  Walking in the cold air burns MORE calories!
